For the only collaboration on “Midnights“, “Snow on the Beach,” Taylor Swift is joined by Lana Del Rey under the production of Jack Antonoff, a mutual and frequent collaborator of the two acclaimed songwriters.
After Antonoff won the award for Producer of the Year at the 64th Grammy's, Lana Del Rey congratulated him on Instagram and shared a photo of the producer next to her and Swift that sparked rumors of the two singers working together, a much-anticipated duet among fans.
Swift had previously expressed her appreciation for Del Rey’s work, referring to her as one of her “favorite artists of the [2010’s]” as well as “one of the most influential artists in pop” during her Woman of the Decade acceptance speech at Billboard’s Women In Music 2019.
Speculation of their collaboration continued after Taylor shared a behind-the-scenes clip of the making of Midnights, where she’s seen wearing the same sweater from the day she and Lana were spotted together. The video also confirmed Jack’s involvement in the album.
On October 7, Swift unveiled the title of the track, and Del Rey being featured, in the final episode of her TikTok series, 'Midnight Mayhem with Me'.
"“Snow On The Beach,” featuring Lana Del Rey, is track 4 on Midnights, and I can not get through that sentence without grinning because I am such a massive fan of Lana Del Rey, more on that later. The song is about falling in love with someone at the same time as they’re falling in love with you, in this sort of in this cataclysmic, faded moment where you realize someone feels exactly the same way that you feel, at the same moment, and you’re kind of looking around going, “Wait, is this real? Is this a dream? Is this for real? Is it really happening? Kinda like it would be if you were to see snow falling on a beach. And Lana Del Rey is, in my opinion, one of the best musical artists ever, the fact that I get to exist at the same time as her is an honor and a privilege, and the fact that she would be so generous as to collaborate with us on this song is something I’m gonna be grateful for life. Absolutely love her and I really hope you love this song as much as I do."
