Chicago Drill (AKA:Chiraq Drill) is a form of Trap that originated in the South Side of Chicago in the early 2010s. Chicago drill is characterized by bass-heavy, dense, and typically syncopated percussion, featuring ticking hi-hats and gunshot-like snare rolls. Chicago drill's rhythmic elements are sometimes attributed to Footwork influences. The genre was anticipated in the work of Atlanta rappers Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame and producer Lex Luger. It is generally considered to have been pioneered by producers Young Chop, DJ Kenn, and DJ L, and rappers they worked with at Glory Boyz Entertainment, particularly Chief Keef, Lil Reese, and Fredo Santana.
Chicago drill production is typically maximalist, with dominant, menacing synth melodies and noisy sub-basses often serving as the backbone for energetic beats. Despite that, producers have displayed many different approaches, from more minimal beats inspired by Zaytoven to ethereal, Cloud Rap-influenced productions. Rappers typically employ a distinctive monotonous, drawling flow that is occasionally auto-tuned. Whereas trap rappers usually combine stories of drug dealing with stories of a rise to wealth and party lifestyle, Chicago drill is often less lavish, often containing incredibly violent and nihilistic lyrics, frequently linking it with Gangsta Rap. Chicago drill has faced criticism from older Hip Hop listeners for its usually minimalistic lyricism, avoiding any use of wordplay and metaphor. Artists have argued that their lyrical style is not born from a lack of talent, but rather a conscious decision to place the descriptions of the drug dealer's lifestyle at the center of the listener's attention. Chicago drill, as with other Drill scenes, has been a matter of controversy and legal matters, as it's been alleged to cause violence. Bop, an upbeat and melodic style inspired by Futuristic Swag, quickly emerged from Chicago drill in the early-to-mid-2010s.
Chicago drill would quickly spread to other locations in the world. New York rappers like Bobby Shmurda and Rowdy Rebel helped the sound gain popularity on the East Coast, and Brixton crews 150 and 67 were the first to popularize the sound in the UK. The sound would even get a foothold outside the Anglosphere in France, with artists like Kaaris. A new development in the genre called UK Drill would appear in Brixton towards the mid-2010s. UK drill would spread and influence artists across the world, inspiring the New York Drill scene in particular. Despite somewhat losing its prominence due to the rise of UK drill and other styles, Chicago drill would continue to develop throughout the 2010s and early 2020s, with novel styles and scenes still emerging.
