At times you think you’re listening to Pink Floyd, then there’s a bit of a Dire Straits vibe happening, then it switches again and you feel and hear the influence of Leonard Cohen. Wrap these sounds in lyrics written from a heart of social conscience and you have a fair description of the music of Marty Lowman. Lowman is a singer/songwriter based in the Windsor, Ontario area. After a musical hiatus he’s back and back with a vengeance. His songs tackle issues . “Twenty Dollars” paints a picture of the plight of the homeless and suggests that we all have a part in the solution - “My Neighbours” is a contemplation of the relationship between the United States and Canada written from the perspective of living in a border town – “Dirty Oil” addresses some of the controversy and environmental concerns with the Athabasca Tar Sands. Then the mood changes to light-hearted musings with songs like “My Sixties” and “Cowgirl on Coffee,” and then it changes again to an esoteric Cohenesque tone with songs like “Trust the Guide” and “Dancing With Father Time?” The variety of the musical styles, the changes in lyrical theme, and the excellent musicianship of the band provides a range of sonic and emotional experience for the listener. Audiences leave Lowman’s concerts, entertained, challenged and inspired.
