The polonaise is a dance that is based on a Polish dance, the Polonez . Originally meant 'slow Polish dance in triple time, but later in the Netherlands and Flanders it was used to mean "a dance in which one puts ones' hands on the shoulders of the previous person" (according to Van Dale, 2005). During the dance the walking direction can be reversed at will. The polonaise will include dancing at weddings and during carnival

De polonaise is een dans die gebaseerd is op een Poolse dans, de Polonez. Aanvankelijk betekende het 'langzame Poolse dans in driekwartsmaat', maar later werd het in Nederland en Vlaanderen gebruikt in de betekenis "dans waarbij men in een sliert achter elkaar host, met de handen op de schouders van de voorgaande persoon" (aldus Van Dale, 2005). Gedurende de dans kan de wandelrichting naar believen worden omgekeerd. De polonaise wordt onder andere gedanst op bruiloften en tijdens carnaval.
