t.A.T.u. (Russian: Тату) are a Russian pop duo consisting of Lena Katina and Julia Volkova. Both artists previously performed in the children’s musical group Neposedy before being managed by producer and director Ivan Shapovalov and signing with the Russian label Neformat. Their debut album "200 Po Vstrechnoy" (2001) achieved commercial success in Eastern Europe, leading to a contract with Interscope Records and the release of its English-language counterpart, "200 km/h in the Wrong Lane," in 2002. The album was certified platinum by the IFPI for selling one million copies in Europe, became the first album by a foreign group to reach number one in Japan, and received gold certifications in both the United States and the United Kingdom. It included the international singles "All the Things She Said" and "Not Gonna Get Us." In 2003, t.A.T.u. represented Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Ne ver, ne boysya," placing third. In 2005, the duo released their second international album "Dangerous and Moving" along with its Russian counterpart "Lyudi Invalidy." After parting ways with Shapovalov, they continued to promote their work and released the single "All About Us." They later established their own production company, T.A. Music, and were associated with the film "You and I" (2008), which was inspired by their career. Their final pair of albums, "Vesyolye Ulybki" and "Waste Management," were released between 2008 and 2009. t.A.T.u. officially disbanded in 2011, with both members pursuing solo careers. They have reunited periodically for performances, including an appearance at the opening ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. t.A.T.u. are among the few Russian music acts to achieve significant international success.
