Guns For Lovers is an electronica and indietronic project band from Wales. It is the brain-child of a bored Thom James (Scarfboy), which came about after listening to loads of his favourite music and then spending an entire night emerged in loops and samples. The result was an entire album worth of songs. Inspired by Mr. Scruff, Bonobo, Quantic, Nostalgia 77, Bent, Avalanches, Alice Russell, U.N.K.L.E, Digitalism, Amon Tobin, Atomic Hooligan, Beastie Boys, Spanky Wilson, Dirty Diggers, Pendulum, Erykah Badu, The Headcase Ladz, Boom Bip, Mylo, Daft Punk, Prefuse 73, Tom Vek, Widdy, The Limp Twins, Fat Freddy's Drop, Thievery Corporation, Massive Attack and a host of Ninja Tune, Zebra Traffic and Tru Thoughts artists, college life was as chilled out as it was supposed to be. When in college in winter 2005, one of his housemates introduced Thom and 2 others to the Hip Hop eJay program and set a challenge. Each of them make a hip-hop song and at the end of the night, they'd have a competition to see who's was the best. Quickly finishing a "4-minute cross-genre epic with spanish/newport vibes" and committing some of the "worst lyrics thats ever been laid down", Thom waited for the others to finish their tracks, so decided to have a fiddle around. In the next room, a young MC² had long thrown in the towel on the idea of a hip-hop song and was hard at work on his seminal track "Twisted Twilight" and it quickly dawned on Thom that with the breadth of samples he had at his disposal, he could do something which had always intrigued him; he could do something different. In a few short hours, the album "It's All Over And We Know It" was created, a concept album about what can be achieved with a limited amount of resources at your disposal and what can be achieved by absolutely anyone. It was about putting things in the right order, rather then creating something entirely new. "I wanted to create something that didn't need to be remixed. It already was a remix of 100 different songs out there but it ws also very, very original." And apart from one Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds sample and the voice of Thomas Edison, all that was used to create the album was a few left over lyrics, a little imagination and a sense of timing. The result was a album inspired by breakbeats, electro, dub, funk, ambient chillout and electronica. All that was needed was a name, and the moniker of Guns For Lovers was settled upon without any great debate from conflicting sides of Thom's brain. Proud of the fact that he used a very public medium to create a very personal album You can hear it in full for the first time on last.fm. Future work is in the pipeline, this time with different ideas, new members, collaborations and with the idea to record without the aid of programs like eJay but for now, sit down and kick back with Guns For Lovers.
