https://theculpatwins.bandcamp.com/ The Culpa Twins are an electronic synth-pop band from Pudsey, West Yorkshire. The band is comprised of genetically identical twins Gerrard and Simian Culpa, who were born five years apart. The band were formed in utero according to Gerrard, the spokesperson of the two twins, in most interviews. They were well known around their hometown for their ‘eccentric’ behaviour both keen amateur cineasts, musicians and ufologists. Fascinated by the advent of electronic instruments the two began to experiment with a second-hand Roland keyboard, apparently bought at a school jumble sale. The usually reticent Simian began to come out of his shell, feeling able to express himself more fully than before through the medium of music. Inspired, Gerrard began to pen songs - mostly revolving around the twin’s shared loves of film, electronics and old women. The two of them (and their keyboard) began to perform at local pubs and clubs as “The Culpa/Roland Trio” until an incident involving a pint of ‘MacWhirter’s Olde Unusal’ left the band without an instrument (and down a member according to Simian - according to Gerrard). It was the night of Tuesday the 24th of February 1981 when Simian Culpa stormed off inconsolably into the dark clutching his defunct instrument. What followed was the first of many controversies that would plague the band. Records for the night in question are spotty but, according to Gerrard, Simian claims that night to have been abducted and re-engineered by extraterrestrials from beyond the Zeta Reticuli system. He claimed to have received special musical abilities that had made him a “psychotronic music transmitter” as well as a Musical Interface Logistic Computer (or MILC), which to some bore an uncanny resemblance to a Commodore 64. This alleged experience and new instrument would later inspire one of their tracks “Simian Reborn”. After the incident the twins returned to performing with renewed vigour and were spotted 6 years later during a performance at The New New Inn (now the New New New Inn) by Joe Peeker, the flamboyant owner of Pirate Bear Records Ltd. After swift negotiations at the bar the Twins were signed and began work of their first album “The Ecstasy of Communication”. Promos of the tracks were well received in the local music press, the NME (Northern Musical Expose) wrote: “Who the hell are these weirdos?!” - Dave Shelthwaite, NME. Sadly the Twins’ debut album was shelved due to the scandalous collapse of Pirate Bear Records. Joe Peeker mysteriously disappeared, as did the twin’s themselves. They were located eight weeks later in the vicinity of the Avebury Stone Circle in an obvious state of distress and during police interrogation claimed to have quote: “saved the world from Cthultic entities from beyond the Fourth eon.”. They were charged with the abduction and possible murder of Joe Peeker, only to see the charges dropped due to lack of evidence. The Twins have spent the consequent years in and out of the mental health system. All tracks now available on Bandcamp! https://theculpatwins.bandcamp.com/
