Trap latino had a period of big mainstream fame between 2016 and 2018. Some of the songs that fueled the rise of the genre were "Esclava (Remix)" by Bryant Myers, "La ocasión" by De La Ghetto, Arcángel, Ozuna and Anuel AA, and "Soy peor" by Bad Bunny. These songs became viral hits that surpassed hundreds of millions of plays on digital platforms. These songs also set the genre trend of having collaborations between several artists, which increased their reach and popularity. Trap latino remained the most popular urban music genre over Reggaetón for a while, making that artists associated with reggeatón joined the genre. Some examples are Arcángel, Farruko, J Balvin, Maluma, among others. Reggaetón artists saw in trap latino an opportunity to renew their sound and image, as well as reaching a diverse audience. However, this genre also generated controversy and criticism for its explicit content and its apology to the consumption of illicit substances. This caused some media and authorities to try censor or restrict the diffusion of the genre.
Trap latino has undergone a transformation in the last decade, moving away from the melodic sound and predominantly sexual lyrics that characterized it and moved closer to American Trap, with more aggressive and lyrics focused on crime, violence and braggadocio. Some of the artists who have driven this change are YOVNGCHIMI, Luar la L and Eladio Carrión, who have adopted a more aggressive and street style, more closely related to Latin Rap.
