Long Island, NY’s Rockets On Wire are fueled by disappointment. I Am Not Your Home, their full length debut, is a record built out of post-college frustration and jilted love. “Most of us graduated from college and didn’t have a clue what we were doing,” says guitarist Ryan Barnes. “We were displaced. We moved back home but we didn’t really live there anymore.” The quintet weathered a rocky first year as a band – long term romances dissolved, members came and went. “My girlfriend dumped me,” says Ryan, “and the next day Marie (Mayes, vocalist) showed up at my house with a case of beer and we started writing the record.” Harvesting the resulting anger and despair of her own break-up, Mayes’ lyrics are an embittered confession and they paint a portrait of one simply trying to keep it together. “I’m just fine,” insists a refrain which is threaded throughout the record, while the track “Fall” proclaims “I want to make you cry.” Taking a year to complete, I Am Not Your Home was crafted with an obsessive attention to detail. Produced by Jesse Cannon (Saves The Day, Man Overboard), the result is a sonic catharsis, a record that oscillates between huge soaring choruses, chaotic noisy dirges, and sparse piano arrangements. Vocalist Marie Mayes displays a duality in her voice – switching from the quiet melody of a trained songbird to the howl of a demon seamlessly. I Am Not Your Home ends with a breaking down, a gradual decrescendo that fades from huge guitar chords and crashing drums, to feedback, to a droning hum, and finally to a single piano melody played softly, echoing like footsteps walking away; as if there is a brightness over the horizon reflecting the last line of the album, “If I die, make me diamonds.
