Afroswing is a genre that emerged in the United Kingdom during the mid-2010s. Though the genre is rhythmically and vocally rooted in hip hop's percussion (typically incorporating a bass kick and drum snare), vocal mannerisms and lyrical focus, it's massively influenced by a number of different genres, including Dancehall, Afrobeats and Contemporary R&B, as well as various West African Music genres, which its melodies are commonly influenced by. Some other genres that afroswing takes influence from are Grime, Trap or UK Funky, although their impact on afroswing is considerably lesser.
Producers such as Blairy Hendrix and Joshua Beatz, and rappers like J Hus
have been credited as precursors of afroswing. Its name was coined by rapper Kojo Funds. The genre saw commercial success in the UK during the late 2010s, with many afroswing songs making it into the British charts, notably Ramz's hit "Barking". The genre's rise is commonly seen as a result of the growing West African community in the UK, with many afroswing artists having a West African ethnic background.
