Born in Coventry, England in 1952, Stan showed an extraordinary musical gift from a young age—composing his first classical piece by age eight and singing at the famed Coventry Cathedral as a head choir boy. His passion eventually led him to the ethereal sounds of the shakuhachi, a traditional Japanese bamboo flute. Under the guidance of esteemed teachers such as Ronnie Seldin in New York and Yoshio Kurahashi in Kyoto, Stan earned his Shihan (Master’s teaching license) and the name “Kakudo.” He now carries forward the ancient Zen meditation music tradition, sharing its depth and beauty with students across Texas. Sensei Stan’s unique blend of Western and Eastern musical perspectives has earned him a devoted following. He performs regularly at festivals and prestigious venues including the Myerson Symphony Center, Dallas Museum of Art, and the Kimbell Museum of Art. His album “Shakuhachi Meditation Music” is among the best-selling recordings of solo shakuhachi by a non-Japanese artist. A featured performer at several World Shakuhachi Festivals—from Colorado to New York to Sydney—he has also recorded with the world-famous Turtle Creek Chorale and performed with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra alongside celebrated cellist Yo-Yo Ma.
