It began on January 1, 2017, when the project was formed and aligned with Chateau Agency. Within weeks, DAVID officially launched and released its first work, GENESIS, establishing a sound rooted in gothic atmosphere and dramatic storytelling. Early on, the project signaled international ambition with a surprise guest appearance at Versailles’ live performance at La Machine du Moulin Rouge in Paris. Throughout 2017, DAVID steadily built its presence in Japan’s visual scene, performing at Toyosu PIT, Tokyo KINEMA Club and various key venues across Tokyo and Yokohama. SUI soon founded his own label, Resonance, and DAVID transitioned into a more independent structure. The release of REQUIEMAGE later that year expanded the project’s conceptual scope, deepening its biblical and existential themes. In 2018, DAVID intensified its activity with a series of self-produced events titled 「現世創世録」 and released Souseiroku I ~Birth and Confession~, marking the beginning of a larger mythos that would unfold over the following years. The project’s blend of ritualistic live performances and carefully constructed releases became a defining trait. By 2019, the second chapter, Souseiroku II ~Fearless Scenario~, culminated in the ambitious one-man live “The Fearless Scenario” at Shibuya TSUTAYA O-WEST. Shortly after, DAVID suspended live activities, closing its first era. The project returned in January 2020 with its third anniversary oneman and the launch of the “Gothculture” concept. This period reframed DAVID’s identity through darker, more introspective works such as Gothculture -Nightimage- and Gothculture -Decadent Art-. Despite the global pandemic forcing cancellations, including a planned European tour in Paris, DAVID adapted through streaming lives and audienceless performances, maintaining momentum during uncertain times. In 2021, a new chapter unfolded with the series “Hexagramearth,” a structured narrative arc culminating in the tour final at Shibuya Pleasure Pleasure. The release of Hexagramearth -Unmei no Ito to Ito- consolidated this phase, merging esoteric symbolism with sharpened musical direction. The fifth anniversary tour in 2022, titled 「旧約誓書」, revisited and reconstructed earlier motifs while introducing new material such as Messiah. The two-day tour final, “Mary’s Testament” and “The Confession of Christ,” marked the end of another major cycle. Soon after, DAVID paused activities once more. On June 8, 2023, the project revived under a renewed notation: DAVID in all capitals. The 6th anniversary oneman “RE:BORN Ⅵ Prophecy” announced a transformation rather than a simple return. Intimate “Basilica” unplugged concept lives followed, presenting the music in stripped-down, devotional form. The release of Prophecy and subsequent works signaled a refined balance between solemnity and intensity. The seventh anniversary showcase in 2024, 「美しき退廃線」, highlighted DAVID’s continued evolution, bridging past and present themes. Projects such as Harness and the “Heptagram” series reflected a mature synthesis of the mythological universe SUI had been constructing since 2017. In 2025, DAVID reached its eighth anniversary with a major oneman at Shibuya Pleasure Pleasure and the release of the full album Made in Gothic -Janus no shōzō-. International activity expanded with the TRIAD TOUR in Chile, Brazil and Mexico, affirming a growing global audience. Yet, at the height of this momentum, DAVID announced an indefinite hiatus later that year, closing another chapter in its ongoing narrative. Across its lifespan, DAVID has never functioned as a conventional band. It is a serialized work of art, unfolding in acts, testaments and prophecies. Each era builds upon the last, weaving theology, decadence and personal confession into a singular, evolving canon shaped by SUI’s uncompromising vision. ---- David was a four-piece from south Wales consisting of: Ian England (organ/vocals) of Cardiff; Phil Edwards (drums) from Newport; Sid Petherick (lead guitar) from Penarth; and Dave Martin (bass/vocals) from Cardiff.
