Def Leppard Is An English Rock Band Formed In 1976 In Sheffield. Since 1992 The Band Has Consisted Of Rick Savage Bass Backing Vocals Joe Elliott Lead Vocals Rick Allen Drums Backing Vocals Phil Collen Guitar Backing Vocals And Vivian Campbell Guitar Backing Vocals . They Established Themselves As Part Of The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal Movement Of The Early 1980s. The Band's Greatest Commercial Success Came Between The Early 1980s And The Early 1990s. Their First Album 1980's On Through The Night Reached The Top 15 In The UK But Received Little Notice Elsewhere. Their Second Album 1981's High 'n' Dry Was Produced By Mutt Lange Who Helped Them Begin To Define Their Melodic Hard Rock Style And The Album's Most Popular Track "Bringin' On The Heartbreak" Became One Of The First Rock Videos Played On MTV In 1982 But The Album Only Reached The Top 30 And 40 In The UK And US. Def Leppard's Next Studio Album Pyromania Was Released In January 1983 With "Photograph" And "Rock Of Ages" Both Topping The US Rock Tracks Chart And Reaching The Top 20 Of The Hot 100. Reaching No. 2 On The US Album Chart Pyromania Was Certified Diamond In The US And 7× Platinum In Canada And Reached The Top 20 In The UK But Did Not Sell Much Elsewhere. Def Leppard's Fourth Album The More Pop-Oriented Hysteria 1987 Topped The UK US New Zealand Canadian Australian And Norway Charts. It Was Written As A Tribute To The Late Actress Marilyn Monroe As Singer Joe Elliott Often Stated Before Playing The Song Live Onstage. When Released As A Single It Reached #1 On The Billboard Top Tracks Chart And #12 On The Pop Singles Chart. In 2006 The Song Was Used In Promotional Ads For The DVD Release Of Blades Of Glory. In 2009 It Was Named The 13th Greatest Hard Rock Song Of All Time By VH1. The 1993 Live Recording Of The Song In Sheffield England Appeared In The Music Video Game Guitar Hero III Legends Of Rock As Part Of A Def Leppard Downloadable Track Pack As Did The 1993 Live Recording Of "Rock Of Ages". The Song Was Also Included In The Tracklisting Of The Rhythm Music Video Game Battle Of The Bands. In 2008 They Performed The Song With Country Star Taylor Swift On CMT Crossroads. Joe Elliott Comented On The Vault Album That This Song Was A Big Hit In The US And That He Felt Disappointed That It Didn't Become A Hit In The UK. Nationally Syndicated Sports Talk Show Host Jim Rome Commonnly Refers To "Photograph" As One Of The All Time Great Rock Songs Ever. There Are Two Versions Of The Music Video. The Uncensored Version Shows A Knife Scene At The Beginning And On The Censored Version Of The Video It Is Almost The Same Except The Knife Scene Is Replaced With A Stationary Black Cat. There Are Several Appearances By The Late Marilyn Monroe In The Video As The Song Is Actually About Her And Lead Singer Joe Elliot's Declaration That He Doesn't "want Her Photograph" But That That's All He's Got And He Must Admire Her From Afar. The Music Video Was Directed By David Mallet And Was Shot On Thursday December 2 1982 Bassist Rick Savage's 22nd Birthday In Battersea London England. It Featured The Video Debut Of Guitarist Phil Collen. The All-American Rejects Performed A Cover Version To This Song Live On VH1 Rock Honors.

Pyromania Is The Third Studio Album By British Rock Band Def Leppard Released In 1983. It Broke The Band Across North America And In Japan And Would Sell Over 10 Million Copies In The US Alone. It Featured New Guitarist Phil Collen And Was Produced By Robert John "Mutt" Lange. The Album Was Partially Recorded With Original Guitarist Pete Willis Whose Rhythm Guitar Tracks And Backing Vocals Appear On All Songs. Midway Through The Recording Sessions Willis Was Fired For Excessive Alcohol Abuse And Replaced By Phil Collen Who Contributed Guitar Solos And Other Parts That Had Not Yet Been Recorded By Willis. On The Original LP Release Willis Is Visible In The Background Of The Photograph Of Singer Joe Elliott While Collen Is Given His Own Personal Photo As The New Full-Time Member Of The Group. The Album Is Noteworthy For Lange's Intensive Production Process. During His Tenure As Guest Moderator On Audiophile Website Gearslutz.Com The Album's Engineer Mike Shipley Noted The Following In A Thread On The Album's Production "The Tape Was Constantly Going Over The Heads 20 Hours A Day For 13 Months To The Point Where It Started To Shed So Bad Huge Chunks Of The Oxide Started To Literally Fall Off The Tape. I Had To Make Copies Of The Multi Track And Chop In Small Pieces As The Tape Started To Deteriorate...... Somewhat Nerve Wracking .... But Using The Full Transfer Always Sounded Muddy So We Kept Going Back To The Original Master Or Rather What Was Left Of It And Trying To Finish Before It Totally Disitegrated!!!!! " Three Songs From Pyromania "Photograph" "Rock Of Ages" And "Foolin'" Became Top 40 Singles In The US Benefiting From Their Popularity On The 24-Hour Music Channel MTV.A Guest Musician On The Album Is Thomas Dolby Best Known For The Eighties Pop Standard "She Blinded Me With Science". For Contractual Reasons Dolby Was Credited On The Album Sleeve Under The Pseudonym Booker T. Boffin. The Song "Rock! Rock! Till You Drop" Is Featured In The 2001 Movie Rock Star. In 2004 It Was Ranked 384 On Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time. A Deluxe Edition Of Pyromania Was Released On June 8th 2009 Includes A Digitally Remastered Version Of The Album Plus A Live Bonus CD "Live LA Forum - September 11th 1983".
