2/27/08 Just In General How Do Vocal Melodies Work When Writing? Do You Have The Actual Songs In Place And The Melody And Lyrics Is The Last Thing That Comes Or Do You Toy With The Vocal Melody First And Build The Song Around It? “It Changes Often. Sometimes I’ll Have Chords And Then A Melody That Comes Instantaneously And The Words Emerge From That But Usually It’s Some Feeling It’s Just Something That Clutches Me And It’s Like I’m Grasping It From The Air. Not That You’re Just Plucking Whatever But It’s Like The Way You Can Sense Harmonies When You’re Singing And You Know What Other Voices Work With It. I Think The Same Thing Applies When Writing Music It’s Like You’re Writing Words And Suddenly This Entire Thing Manifests Itself. The Good Ones They Appear Out Of Nowhere All Of A Sudden.” Any Examples Of A Song Off The New Album That Just Came Together Seemingly Effortlessly Like That? “‘Turtle Island’” And Is That Actually About The Place Turtle Island? “Turtle Island Is A Name Of A Place From My Childhood Where I Used To Hang Out. But The Story Isn’t Necessarily About That And It’s Not Necessarily A Story Either. It’s More About A Moment An Opening And A Sense Of Blossoming.” ~ Victoria Ear Farm 3/1/08 “Generally The Keyboard Parts You Hear On The Songs Were Written By Me. Alex And I Embellish And Thicken Together. ‘Turtle Island’ Was A Simple Chord Progression I'd Written But It Developed All Its Color When We Were Together And Able To Bring In Little Bells And Xylophone Sounds And Things Like That.” ~ Victoria Pitchfork 7/9/08 What Song On Devotion Took The Least Amount Of Time To Write? “‘Turtle Island.’ I Wrote That On Piano. I Remember That Being Like Very Bizarre. Well Not Bizarre But It Was Pretty Intense. Like I Had A Complete Place In My Mind And Then I Was Playing The Piano And Then It All Just Sort Of” She Makes A Sound Approximate To A Quick Short Burst Of Wind . As If You Are A Vessel And The Song Is Running Through You And Your Responsibility Is To Just Let It Come. “Exactly. That One.” ~ Victoria Village Voice
