Dream Theater Is An American Progressive Metal Band Formed In 1985 Under The Name Majesty By John Petrucci John Myung And Mike Portnoy While They Attended Berklee College Of Music In Boston Massachusetts. They Subsequently Dropped Out Of Their Studies To Concentrate Further On The Band That Would Eventually Become Dream Theater. Their Current Lineup Consists Of Petrucci Myung Vocalist James LaBrie Keyboardist Jordan Rudess And Drummer Mike Portnoy. Over The Course Of Various Lineup Changes Petrucci And Myung Have Been The Only Two Constant Members And Portnoy Remained With The Band Until 2010 When He Left To Pursue Other Musical Endeavors And He Has Since Been Replaced By Mangini. After A Brief Stint With Chris Collins Followed By Charlie Dominici Who Was Dismissed From Dream Theater Not Long After The Release Of Their First Album LaBrie Was Hired As The Band's Singer In 1991. Dream Theater's First Keyboardist Kevin Moore Left The Band After Three Albums And Was Replaced By Derek Sherinian In 1995 After A Period Of Touring. After Just One Album With Sherinian They Replaced Him With Current Keyboardist Jordan Rudess In 1999. To Date Dream Theater Has Released Fifteen Studio Albums. The Band's Highest-Selling Release Is Their Second Album Images And Words 1992 Which Reached No. 61 On The Billboard 200 Chart. Both The Albums Awake 1994 And Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence 2002 Also Entered The Charts At No. 32 And No. 46 Respectively And Received Critical Acclaim. The Root Of All Evil Is The Opening Track To Dream Theater's Eighth Studio Album Octavarium And Is The 3rd Song In Mike Portnoy's 12 Steps Suite. It Contains What Are Arguably The Heaviest Riffs Of The 5 Songs Which Compile The Suite And Is The Most Face Paced. Like The Other Parts Of The Suite The Lyrics Describe The Struggle Of An Unnamed Character With His Likewise Unnamed Addiction. In The First Part Of The Song VI. Ready The Protagonist Describes All The Attributes That He Has Had In His Life Which He Believes He Needs To Purge. After Describing These Attributes He Then Speaks To Someone Possibly God Telling Them That He Is Ready To Let Go Of All His Past Evil. Finally He Expresses His Desire To Become A Better Person. The Second Segment VII. Remove Has A Similar Lyrical Formula Only This Time The Main Character Speaks With A Higher Sense Of Urgency To Whomever It Is That He Is Speaking To. He Asks For Help Freeing Himself Of The Addiction And Seems To Be Willingly Giving Himself Up To Whatever Purpose The Person Being Spoken To May Have In Store. Another Notable Point Of The Song Is That It Begins Where The Last Song Of The Previous Album Train Of Thought Ended. That Is To Say It Begins On The Very Same Note That The Final Track Of Train Of Thought In The Name Of God Ended On. The Song Also Ends With The Melody Of The Title Track Of The Album Which It Is Featured On Octavarium .

The Root of All Evil is the opening track to Dream theater's eighth studio album Octavarium and is the 3rd song in Mike Portnoy's 12 steps suite.
It contains what are arguably the heaviest riffs of the 5 songs which compile the suite and is the most face paced.
Like the other parts of the suite the lyrics describe the struggle of an unnamed character with his likewise unnamed addiction. In the first part of the song (VI. Ready) the protagonist describes all the attributes that he has had in his life which he believes he needs to purge. After describing these attributes he then speaks to someone, possibly God, telling them that he is ready to let go of all his past evil. Finally he expresses his desire to become a better person.
The second segment (VII. Remove) has a similar lyrical formula only this time the main character speaks with a higher sense of urgency to whomever it is that he is speaking to. He asks for help freeing himself of the addiction and seems to be willingly giving himself up to whatever purpose the person being spoken to may have in store.
Another notable point of the song is that it begins where the last song of the previous album (Train of Thought) ended. That is to say, it begins on the very same note that the final track of train of thought (In the Name of God) ended on.
