Emilio Cao’s First Steps In Music As A Teenager Are Linked To Pop Music In His Hometown Taking Part In Different Musical Groups Brétema NHU… . Shortly After That He Was Called To Play With Them By The Members Of The Group “Voces Ceibes” Benedicto Bibiano Who In The Seventies Sang Social And Political Songs In Galician Against Franco’s Dictatorship Reflecting This Way A Reality Quite Different From The Official One. At That Time He Started To Compose His First Songs. He Became A Member Of A Group Called “Movimento Popular Da Canción Galega” Formed By People Who Tried To Make Folk Music More Dynamic. In The Early Seventies He Left Galiza And Visited And Lived In Many European Countries He Was A Busker In Paris Underground A Dishwasher In Restaurants In Barcelona A Learner Of Different Psychodelic Realities In Amsterdam A Gardener In Copenhaguen…
In One Of His Visits Back In Galiza He Saw Just By Chance A Harp In A Shop Of Secondhand Instruments. One Year Later He Recorded His First Album FONTE DO ARAÑO 1977 Which Was Received With Excellent Reviews By The Media. This Album The First Of The Called Celtic Music In Galiza Was A Turning Point In The Music Of His Country And Opened New Roads That Were Later Followed By Many Artists. It Should Also Be Stressed That Emilio Cao Was The First Musician Who Recovered The Harp As An Instrument For Galician Folk Music There Are Records Of Its Use In The Middle Age . This Instrument Is Now Often Used By A Number Of Groups. At That Time He Formed His Friendship With The Old Welsh Harp Player Elsie Thomas From Swansea And With The Harpist From Brittany Alan Stivell Who Presented Emilio’s First Album.
During All These Years Emilio Cao Has Also Had A Long Relationship With The Portuguese Music World Fausto José Afonso Carlos Paredes Mafalda Veiga… Sharing Projects And Stages With Them Thanks To The Great Cultural Affinity Between Galiza And Portugal. At Present He Is Preparing New Projects With People From Other Portuguese-Speaking Countries Timor Angola… . The Importance Of Poetry In The Work Of Emilio Cao Is Reflected In All His Discography. Apart From Collaborations With Significant Contemporary Poets Uxío Novoneyra Suso De Toro Anxo Ballesteros… Emilio’s Work Includes Also Classic Galician Poets Like Rosalía De Castro Or Manoel Antonio The Boat Pilot And Poet Of The Beginning Of The 20th Century To Whom Emilio Cao Dedicated His Fifth Album CARTAS MARIÑAS . From 1983 On And Alternating With His New Albums Emilio Cao Composes Music For Theatre Audiovisual Performances And Contemporary Dance.
He Has Given Concerts All Around Spain And In A Lot Of European Countries With His Intimist Music Which Brings Us Memories Of Distant Times Of His Country Galiza Or Of A World Of Dreams And Fantasy That We Can Easily Visit Thanks To His Harp.
