Artist Biography For M.R.N.
M.R.N. Was Formed By Dan Halen Thomson And Mike Blumpy Tuller In Fall Of 1988 Near Detroit When They Were 15 And 14 Years Old Respectively With Tuller On Keyboards And Thomson On Vocals. After Alternately Firing Each Others Recommendations For A Guitarist Dan Was Introduced To Todd Mang Nuechterlein Who Hated Electronic Music. Being A Touch Sadistic The Boys Convinced Him To Stay. As The Late 80's Were A Pretty Dismal Time For Underage Lads To Find Good Music They Learned To Record It Themselves. Both Founding Members Went On To Do Engineering Work With Blumpy Moving Out West And Becoming An Engineer/producer His First Published Work Was A Remix For Filter. Halen Assisted Sessions At Detroit's White Room. Dan And Todd Eventually Formed The Rock Revival Outfit 12 Angry Steps. Live Shows For M.R.N. Had Todd On Guitar With Tuller Playing Keys Bass Running The Reel-To-Reel Tape Machine Decent Sequencers Were Cost-Prohibitive At The Time And Mixing The Band. Dan Ran Vocal Mix Changes And Effects On His Custom Junk-Constructed Rack As Well As Various Visual And Light Effects. Later Lineups Saw Tuller's Workload Briefly Replaced With Three Separate Members Drummer Aaron Pitman Keyboardist Luke/Loop And Bassist Mike Bringing The Final Live Lineup To Five. A Last Recording Was Done With Dan And Keyboardist Chris Flock Recording The Appropriately Titled The Best Way To Step Out In 1994. Upon Reaching Legal Drinking Age Dan Ceased Use Of The Band Name For A While Getting His Fix As A Stage Performer With Noir Leather. M.R.N.'s Multi-Layered Sound Relied Far More On Thought-Out Layered Arrangement And Recording Technique Than Gear. All Songs Were Self-Engineered And Self-Produced And Their Basement Studio Methods Were All Self-Taught. The Band's Recording Gear At It's Most Extravagant Was Limited To Two Keyboards A Pc Sequencer An Eight-Track Cassette Bass Guitar And Effects. The Arsenal Never Even Included A Proper Drum Machine And Mike Prided Himself On Inventing His Sounds From Scratch. This Process And The Absence Of Studio-Quality Microphones Necessitated Relentless Layering Of Vocals To Achieve A Believable Tone. To This End M.R.N. Was Far More Experimental Than Might Be Immediately Apparent And Ahead Of The Pack If Now Dated Musically.
