Fishing For Time by Paul G Terry

Artist Biography For Paul G Terry

Paul Was Bought Up In Buckinghamshire UK And Is Now Situated In Kent. His Musical Career Is An Unusual One And Didn't Really Start Off Until He Moved To London To Study Musicology And English Literature At The London College Of Music & Media. There He Wrote For And Performed Electric Guitar & Vocals In A Rock Band Called Wasted Daze. After This Ended He Focused On Solo Material That Eventually Took Him Away From The Popular Music Genre. At That Point He Was Introduced To American Composer Philip Glass And Belgium Composer Wim Mertens And Used Their Style As Templates For Developing A New Form Of Composition Up Until Then He Considered Himself As An Untrained Musician And Worked Mainly From Memory. Later That Year He Moved Away From London To Canterbury Kent And Taught Himself The Principles Of Music Theory How To Read And Write Music And Took Piano Lessons Under Lord Gawain Douglas Who For That Time Was His Mentor And Encouraged His Piano Compositions. One Year Later He Applied For A Music Degree At Christ Church University After Making Some Connections After Being In The Canterbury Choral Society. It Was Here That He Was Under The Guidance Of Paul Edlin Who They Both Admit Would Push Him To His Emotional Limits! It Was At Christ Church That Paul Terry Had Numerous Performances Of Many Pieces Written For Ensemble Orchestral Or Solo Piano. One Notable Piece And Orchestral Choral Arrangement Of The National Anthem Was Performed In The Illustrious Canterbury Cathedral On Two Occasions. After Leaving Christ Church Paul Left Feeling That Having Accurate Performances Of Ensemble Pieces Was Going To Be Impossible Beyond The Realm Of A Music Department Until Maybe A Long Time After. He Is Quoted As Saying "Every Piece That I Wrote Would Need At Least 3 Performances To Get It Close To What I Intended Without Having An Orchestra At My Beck And Call It Isn't Even Worth Writing For Anything More Adventurous Than A Simple Duo" 2006 The Following Year Paul Joined Up With Katie Love A Singer/songwriter And Formed Osiris A Guitar/vocal Duo. Osiris On Facebook Together They Wrote An Album's Worth Of Material Made Two Local Appearances And Played At A Music Festival. There Is No Official Recorded Album But There Is Rumour Of One Appearing This Year! Meanwhile Paul Had Been Working With Technological Advancements That Enabled Him To Use Samples Of Instruments To Realise Larger Compositions. With This He Wrote A Number Of Orchestral Pieces - Two Of Which Were Used In Short Films Guernica And Timescape After The Break Up Of Osiris Paul Felt Very Frustrated With The Limited Potential That Composing In The Computerised Format Offered. "Without The Limited Forms Of Expression A Creative Musical Career Seemed Pointless And Above All Hopeless. With This In Mind I Prepared Myself For The Most Difficult Decision I Had To Make In My Life Whether Or Not To Continue Aspiring For Such A Grand Career" 2007 In The Spring Of That Year Paul Went To Berlin To Stay With A Good Friend And To Get A Better Perspective. Yet The Point Was To Make A Firm Decision One Way Or Another. And On His Return He Decided To Stop Composing. To Be Continued
