Artist Biography For Rantoboko
Born In Rhodesia In 1975 At The Peak Of The Zimbabwean Liberation Guerilla War Sipho Sithole Aka Rantoboko Was Raised On A Farm Plot On The Outskirts Of Harare. He Grew Up Around Field Workers At The Same Time As He Was Part Of The Household That Employed Them. The Innumerable Conflicts Between His Family And The Workers Awakened Rantoboko To Social Injustices At An Early Age. It Didn’t Stop Him However From Building His Own Drum Set From Rusty Olive Oil Tin Cans Where He Amazed His Family With Prodigal Understandings Of Rhythms And Melodies.
In Rantoboko’s Early 20’s His Blind Grandmother Gave Him The Name Rantoboko After His Great Great Grandfather. In 2000 Rantoboko Approached The South African Label Ghetto Ruff Records With A Band Called The Urban Africans. He Worked On Random Productions For The Label For A Year. Which Among Other Things Led To The HIV Film Project “Steps For The Future”. Rantoboko Was Featured On The Soundtrack With The Leading Track And Video“1000 People”. In 2001 Rantoboko Met Swedish Filmmaker Simon Klose Who Filmed An Accoustic Clip And Sent The Tape Back To Swedish Juju Records Producer Breakmecanix. A Year Later Rantoboko Found Himself Living In Malmö Sweden Recording His Debut Album Urban Africa. During His Stay In Sweden Rantoboko Also Collaborated With Looptroop On Their Album “The Struggle Continues” As Well As On Embee’s Grammy Winning Album “Tellings From Solitaria”. The Album “Urban Africa” Album Was Released In Scandinavia In 2005 And In Italy And Koreain 2006. The Album Is A One Of A Kind Fusion Of Accoustic Afro Soul Reggae And R&B. Rantoboko’s Chimurenga Inspired Guitar Style And Poignant Voice Tells Tales About The Hardships Of Day To Day Life In Modern African Megapolises. Featured On The Album Are Sweden’s Foremost Political Rappers Timbuktu Chords And Promoe. “Urban Africa” Is As Much About Raising Awareness About The Growing Social Injustices In Contemporary Africa As It Is About Celebrating The Beauty Of Music. In 2006 Rantoboko Recorded A Song For The Soundtrack Of The Forthcoming Hollywood Feature Film “Hotstuff” An Apartheid Epic Featuring Tim Robbins. Rantoboko Lives In Johannesburg South Africa.
