The Band Was Founded By Journalist Bob Stanley Born December 25 1964 And Pete Wiggs Born May 15 1966 In Croydon UK January 1990. After Recording 2 Singles With Guest Singers Sarah Cracknell Born April 12 1967 Chelmsford Essex Joined As A Full Member. The Band Is Named After A French Football Team. Saint Etienne Are One Of The Bands Who Defined The Early 90s Indie Dance Genre Fusing The Production Values Of The Dance-Pop That Emerged In The Wake Of The Second Summer Of Love With The Clever Lyrics And Self-Aware Production Of Indie Music.

Released August 2009 On So Tough Deluxe Edition Notes An Extended Vocal Version Of Instrumental Railway Jam This Is Incorrectly Tagged On Download Sites As Railway Jam Vocal Version . The CD Cover & Booklet For The Deluxe Re-Issue Both Confirm That The Correct Title Is In Fact Orpington Blues. Bob Stanley Says In 2009 "...We Weren't That Happy With The Melody Didn't Think It Lived Up To The Backing Track. That Was Going To Be Called Orpington Blues A Double Tribute To The Suburban Commuter Train Journey And To Grange Hill. Duane Orpington. Maybe You Don't Remember Him." And In August 2023 Bob Said "Railway Jam Wasn't Intended To Be An Instrumental. But The Melody We Wrote Couldn't Match The Backing Track So We Ended Up Ditching The Song And Halving It's Length. The Mood We Were Going For Was A Train Trip On Any Of The Lines Heading Out From Waterloo Victoria And London Bridge To Destinations Including Whyteleafe Brentford Martins Heron Bat & Ball Clock House And Orpington."
