The Serpent by Sleeping Dogs Wake

Artist Biography For Sleeping Dogs Wake

Sleeping Dogs Wake Was Formed In 1987 By Karin Sherret And Robert Wilcocks. The Duo Had Collaborated Together Across Several Years Before Finally Creating The Band That Would Shape Their Future. The Concept Was Simple Post Punk Avant-Garde Fury! In 1989 Sleeping Dogs Wake Released Their First Single “Toys For Alice” Which Was Voted “Single Of The Week” In The Then Popular Magazine Sounds. Two Highly Acclaimed Albums Followed First “Understanding” In 1989 And Then “Threnody” In 1990. Both Were Released On The One Little Indian Label. The Duo Performed Live With Raw Energy Without Using Sequencers Or Computers A Rare Thing At The Time When Many Bands Were Starting To Use Prepared “backing Tracks” To Perform Live. Sleeping Dogs Wake Toured Extensively With Great Success As A Support Act Most Notably Across Europe Supporting The Cassandra Complex In 1990. SDW Also Supported Sugarcubes In London And Prong In Amsterdam. The Band Started Working On Their Third Album In Late 1990 And Then Toured Successfully In Germany Again This Time Supporting Katastrophe Philsofen. SDW Performed Many Tracks From The Unrecorded Third Album On That Tour. SDW Returned To England To Extend The Live Band And Included Bass Player Haggis In The Line Up. The Band Played Several Concerts In Britain Before Finally Splitting Up After A Show In New Cross London In Early 1991. The Band Was Deeply Frustrated By The Lack Of Label Support To Build On The Concert Successes Achieved On The Mainland. Sleeping Dogs Wake Reformed In Late 1992 And Continued To Perform Live With Various Extended Line Ups Until 1995. But The Creative Spark That Had Fired The Band Onto Those Early Alternative Punk Stages Had Gone. The Third Album “Up!” Was Finally Released Through One Little Indian In 1992. It Was Reprogrammed To Include More Commercial Beats With Less Demanding Or Experimental Sounds And Rhythms. The Band Went On To Release Two Further Albums On The Hyperium Label “Sugar Kisses” And “Under The Stars”. Both Albums Followed In The More Commercial Direction. That Final Recording And Touring Line Up Included Jens Lankniv On Bass. SDW Split Again In 1995.
