Its Lyrics Are A Clear Contemplation Of Suicide And Relate To The Lead Singer Of Joy Division And One Of Bono's Inspirations Ian Curtis Who Killed Himself In May 1980 - Although Bono Is Said To Have Told Sounds That The Song Is About Curtis In Fact It Appeared In U2’s Set At Least As Early As February 1980 Therefore Preceding The Singer’s Death. The B-Side Was An Instrumental Song Called "Things To Make And Do". It Was The Second Single The Band Recorded After Signing The Contract With Island Records.
