Artist Biography For Yochanan

Yochanan Was Born In Cape Town South Africa In 1972. He Comes From A Musical Family His Mother And Sister Playing The Piano And His Brother The Guitar And Bass. At The Age Of 18 He Borrowed A Guitar From His Uncle And Began Teaching Himself Rhythm And Chords While Also Busking Outside Pubs And Restaurants To Keep Afloat. He Started Jamming With His Brother Doing A Kinda Duo Thing All The While Looking For A Drummer Who Could Put Some Groove In It. It Was In 1994 That A Friend Introduced Them To Drummer And Percussionist Brian De Goede And They Started Jamming Together A Lot. Hours Upon Hours In The Rehearsal Room. Those Days There Were Rehearsal Spaces Available At 25 Wale Street. The City Was Abuzz With New Sounds And New Talent Popping Up All Over The Place. We Had Just Heard The Rise Of Johannes Kerkorrel 'Die Gereformeerde Blues Band' Koos Kombuis Valiant Swart Springbok Nude Girls And The Like. Not To Speak Of The Great Stuff Coming Out Of Jo'Burg. The Trio Looked Hard For A Vocalist And When Grant Van Der Westhuisen Joined Along With Guitarist Chris Von Walter Boomslang Was Formed. The Were Dabbling Mostly In Alternative Garage Funk Rock Stuff. They Played Together For 2 Years Touring The East Coast Until Dissolving In '96. Some People Left And Some People Joined And MoodPhaze5 Was Spawned With Denver Turner And Ernestine Deane On Vocals. In 1997 Yochanan Left The Band And Followed Yeshua To Kleinmond In The Overberg. He Was Playing In The Local Church And Collaborating With Fantastic Local Artists Like Frazer Barry And The Community Gospel Choir. This Is The Time And The Place Where Many Of The Melodies And Ideas Were Born That Can Be Heard On Songs Like 'What A Balagan' And 'Declaration Of The Children'.
