Deathdream is more of a scene than an actual Vaporwave subgenre, which started around late 2015 and early 2016, despite the fact that we can find traces of its haunting, decaying narrative a few years prior. It is mainly characterized by a very lo-fi sound borrowed from Broken Transmission as well as a minimalist use of samples arranged in a sparse way, often covered in Dark Ambient drones. Yet the most important aspect these albums have in common is their narrative around death, mystery and abandonment.

Deathdream is more of a scene than an actual Vaporwave subgenre, which started around late 2015 and early 2016, despite the fact that we can find traces of its haunting, decaying narrative a few years prior. It is mainly characterized by a very lo-fi sound borrowed from Broken Transmission as well as a minimalist use of samples arranged in a sparse way, often covered in Dark Ambient drones. Yet the most important aspect these albums have in common is their narrative around death, mystery and abandonment. The sound often conveys hopelessness through hazy leads lost in the middle of the habitual background whirs, but some albums also exhibit the hidden grace of melancholy using distant choirs or soft synths. Noise is also an essential part of these albums, from the smallest glitch caused by an interrupted transmission to the harsh winds covering the music.
