Danger Dan (Daniel Pongratz, born on 1 June 1983 in Aachen) is a German musician, rapper, songwriter and a central figure in the group Antilopen Gang, as well as a solo artist with a distinct political voice in German music. Early Life and Musical Roots Pongratz grew up in a politically engaged household. His parents were active in the left-wing scene and encouraged his early interest in music. He learned piano and other instruments as a child and played in several punk bands and a funk band as a pianist during his youth, long before he was known as a rapper. His younger brother, Tobias Pongratz, introduced him to hip-hop, which marked a turning point in his creative development. Daniel attended Viktoria-Gymnasium in Aachen briefly and was involved in political activism even then; a notable early incident was his arrest during a protest in Munich against the Security Conference in 2001. After several school changes and leaving without completing his Abitur, he passed an entrance exam to study music therapy at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. There he met musician Sebastian Sturm and joined the reggae band Jin Jin, performing as a pianist and recording two albums before leaving the program to pursue music full-time. Formation of Antilopen Gang In 2005, Pongratz founded the satirical gangsta rap project Caught in the Crack with his brother Tobias (Panik Panzer) and Koljah. This early experiment in rap and satire evolved into the hip-hop collective Antilopen Gang around 2009, with Danger Dan, Panik Panzer, Koljah and later NMZS. The group blended irony, sharp social critique and absurd humor, gradually building a strong following in the German underground scene. Their early releases often circulated as free downloads, and over the years Antilopen Gang became known for songs that challenged social norms and political issues. Solo Work and Themes Danger Dan’s solo career began in 2008 with the EP Coming out, which already tackled heavy subjects like antisemitism and the Holocaust — rare themes in German hip-hop at the time. Contemporary critics noted the boldness of addressing such topics in the genre. In 2012 he released Dinkelbrot & Ölsardinen (another EP) and a collaboration album Aschenbecher with NMZS. After the tragic suicide of NMZS in 2013, Pongratz focused more on Antilopen Gang. His first full solo album, Reflexionen aus dem beschönigten Leben, appeared in 2018 on the independent label Jochen’s kleine Plattenfirma and reached No. 20 on the German charts. Breakthrough with “Das ist alles von der Kunstfreiheit gedeckt” In March 2021, Danger Dan released the single “Das ist alles von der Kunstfreiheit gedeckt” and later an album under the same title. The song confronts figures associated with the political right such as Jürgen Elsässer, Götz Kubitschek and Alexander Gauland and explores the limits of artistic freedom and free speech while invoking those legal protections. It entered the German singles charts and quickly attracted wide attention. The track and its piano-driven style brought Danger Dan broader media exposure, including a high-profile performance on ZDF Magazin Royale with pianist Igor Levit. By mid-2024 the video had amassed more than 21 million views on YouTube. Recognition and Impact 2021 was a landmark year. Danger Dan won several major awards, including: VIA-VUT Indie Award for Best Act and recognition for the Antilopen Gang’s label. Multiple honors at the Preis für Popkultur (Favorite Song, Favorite Album, Favorite Solo Artist). Listen To Berlin Award for Most Creative Music Video. Unprecedented placement occupying the top three spots in radioeins’ annual charts with his songs. In 2023 he received the Deutscher Kleinkunstpreis in the music category, further affirming his significance in German culture. Style and Legacy Danger Dan is known for combining musical versatility with uncompromising political and social commentary. His work moves fluidly between rap, piano balladry and sharp lyricism that refuses simple categorization. Across his career he has challenged listeners to confront difficult topics and reconsider the boundaries of art and criticism in contemporary society.
