There are two types of music that may be collectively referred to as "venice" music. They are: 1) The musical style of Venice, Italy and 2) The musical style of Venice, CA. Although both are considered musical styles, neither "venice" Italy or "venice" California tags are meant to suggest that all of the music in their tags sound alike. The similarity of names themselves, however, is not coincidental, and the Venice Beach Canals were specifically modeled off of their Venice Italy counter-parts.

2) Venice or ‘Venice Beach’ music is the music that emerged from Venice, CA during extreme social change in the period from 1975-1995. African-American, Latino-American, and ‘Hippy’ Anglo cultures all merged together in what was known as the “ghetto by the sea.” Within this wild cultural amalgam, emerged a whole set of West-coast contributions to the burgeoning psychedelic rock, punk-rock, thrash-metal, skate-rock, and indie-rock scenes such as: Suicidal Tendencies, Jane’s Addiction, The Doors. Any bands that emerged within this scene can be described as venice, or as venice beach.
