White Lion is an American glam metal band formed in New York City in 1983 by Danish vocalist Mike Tramp and American guitarist Vito Bratta. The band was primarily active in the 1980s and early 1990s and released their debut album "Fight to Survive" in 1985. They achieved commercial success with the singles "Wait" and "When the Children Cry" from their second album, the double platinum-selling "Pride." Their third album, "Big Game," achieved Gold status, and their fourth album, "Mane Attraction," was supported by a tour. White Lion disbanded in 1991, followed by the release of the compilation album "The Best of White Lion." After unsuccessful attempts to reunite the original lineup, Mike Tramp reformed the band with new members in 1999 and again in 2004. This lineup released a live album in 2005 and the studio album "Return of the Pride" in 2008. In 2023, Tramp revived the band with a series of albums titled "Songs of White Lion," which feature re-recorded versions of classic White Lion tracks. White Lion was formed after Tramp moved from Denmark to Spain and then New York City. He met guitarist Vito Bratta in 1982, and in March 1983 they decided to create a new band. The group went through several rhythm section changes before settling on drummer Nicki Capozzi and bassist Felix Robinson. Managed by L'Amour owners George and Mike Parente, the band signed with Elektra Records in 1984, which later declined to release their debut album. "Fight to Survive" was subsequently released in Japan in 1985 by JVC Records and in the United States by Grand Slamm Records in 1986, charting at number 151 on the Billboard 200. Following further lineup changes, drummer Greg D'Angelo and bassist James LoMenzo joined the band in 1985 and 1986, completing the classic lineup. Signed by Atlantic Records in 1987, White Lion released "Pride," which included the singles "Wait," "Tell Me," and "When the Children Cry." The album reached number 11 on the Billboard 200 and was certified double platinum, with "Wait" peaking at number 8 and "When the Children Cry" reaching number 3. The band toured extensively, supporting acts such as Aerosmith, Stryper, Kiss, and AC/DC. The band also released video albums "Live at the Ritz" and "One Night in Tokyo." In 1989, White Lion released "Big Game," featuring the singles "Little Fighter," "Radar Love," and "Cry for Freedom." The album achieved Gold status and was supported by tours in Europe and the United States. Their fourth album, "Mane Attraction," was released in 1991 and included singles "Love Don't Come Easy," "Lights and Thunder," a re-recorded version of "Broken Heart," "You're All I Need," and "Farewell to You." The album also featured the instrumental "Blue Monday" and the ballad "Till Death Do Us Part." After the departure of D'Angelo and LoMenzo in 1991, the band continued briefly with replacements before disbanding later that year. "The Best of White Lion" was released in 1992, followed by the video/DVD album "Escape from Brooklyn." Following the breakup, members pursued separate projects. James LoMenzo and Greg D'Angelo joined Zakk Wylde's band Lynyrd Skynhead, which became Pride & Glory. Vito Bratta briefly worked with Atlantic Records and attempted to form new projects but largely withdrew from the public eye until 2007. Mike Tramp formed the band Freak of Nature, releasing three albums between 1992 and 1998, and later began a solo career with the 1998 album "Capricorn." Mike Tramp's new version of White Lion, often referred to as Tramp's White Lion, released "Remembering White Lion" in 1999, followed by "Last Roar" in 2004, a box set "The Bootleg Series" in 2004, and the live album "Rocking the USA" in 2005. The band toured Europe in 2006 and released the "Anthology" album in 2006. Legal disputes with Vito Bratta delayed certain tours and releases. "Return of the Pride," the first studio album by the new lineup, was released in 2008. White Lion toured internationally, including performances in India, and released a live DVD titled "Bang Your Head Festival 2005." Afterward, Tramp focused on his solo career and stated in 2013 and 2014 that no further White Lion projects would continue. In 2023, Mike Tramp announced the revival of White Lion with the "Songs of White Lion" trilogy. Volume 1 featured re-recorded classics, followed by Volume 2 in 2024, which included the singles "Lights and Thunder," "Lonely Nights," "Out with the Boys," "The Road to Valhalla," and "Till Death Do Us Part." Volume 3, released in 2025, completed the trilogy with re-recordings of "Cherokee," "Fight to Survive," "All Burn in Hell," and "Radar Love," along with the single "If My Mind is Evil" (Halloween Edition). Tramp has toured in support of the albums across Europe, the United States, and Australia.
