Ratt (stylized as RATT) is an American glam metal band that formed in Hollywood in the early 1970s, originally under the names Firedome, Crystal Pystal, and Mickey Ratt, before shortening to Ratt in 1977. The band achieved commercial success in the 1980s, with albums certified gold, platinum, and multi-platinum by the RIAA, and hit singles including "Round and Round", "Lay It Down", "Wanted Man", "You're in Love", and "Dance". Ratt, along with bands such as Mötley Crüe, has been recognized as influential in the development of the Los Angeles glam metal scene, also known as hair metal or pop metal. The band toured and recorded intermittently from the 1990s to 2021, releasing their final studio album, "Infestation", in 2010. The early lineups of Mickey Ratt featured singer Stephen Pearcy and several musicians including Robbin Crosby, Warren DeMartini, and Juan Croucier. After signing with Atlantic Records, Ratt released a self-titled EP in 1983, which sold over 100,000 copies, followed by their debut full-length album, "Out of the Cellar", in 1984. The album included the single "Round and Round", which reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100, and established the band’s popularity on the radio and MTV. Their second album, "Invasion of Your Privacy" (1985), included the singles "You're in Love" and "Lay It Down" and was certified double platinum in the United States. The band toured extensively in the U.S., Japan, and Europe during this period, including a performance at the Monsters of Rock festival in 1985. Ratt’s third album, "Dancing Undercover" (1986), continued their commercial success, featuring the singles "Dance" and "Slip of the Lip", and was certified platinum. Their fourth album, "Reach for the Sky" (1988), also reached platinum sales and produced singles such as "Way Cool Jr." and "I Want a Woman". Their fifth album, "Detonator" (1990), included collaborations with Desmond Child and Jon Bon Jovi and featured tracks such as "Givin' Yourself Away" and "Lovin' You's a Dirty Job". Around this time, Crosby struggled with substance abuse and left the band, and Pearcy departed in 1992 to form other projects. In 1996, Ratt reunited with Pearcy, DeMartini, Blotzer, and new bassist Robbie Crane, releasing the compilation "Collage" in 1997 and the self-titled album "Ratt" in 1999. Pearcy left again in 2000, replaced by Jizzy Pearl, while Keri Kelli joined as a second guitarist. Crosby publicly disclosed he was HIV-positive in 2001 and died in 2002 from a heroin overdose. Ratt reunited with Pearcy and Croucier in 2006, with tours in 2007 including appearances at Rocklahoma and festivals in North America. John Corabi was briefly part of the lineup in 2008, replaced by Carlos Cavazo. The band released "Infestation" in 2010 and went on a world tour, before entering an indefinite hiatus later that year. Pearcy and Croucier returned in 2012, while Robbie Crane departed. Pearcy left again in 2014, citing ongoing internal tensions. Between 2015 and 2018, legal disputes arose over the rights to the Ratt name, resulting in separate touring versions of the band led by Blotzer and by Pearcy, Croucier, and DeMartini. Court rulings affirmed that Blotzer did not have trademark rights to the band’s name. In 2018, Pearcy and Croucier reformed a new lineup with Pete Holmes on drums and guitarists Jordan Ziff and Chris Sanders. Sanders retired from music in 2020, and Frankie Lindia joined as guitarist. The band planned the Big Rock Summer Tour in 2020, which was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Pearcy indicated interest in recording a final Ratt album with remaining original members. In 2024 and 2025, Croucier and Pearcy performed shows celebrating the band’s classic material, though not under the Ratt name, with Pearcy and DeMartini reuniting as a duo for the M3 Rock Festival in 2025.
