Каскад is a Soviet and Russian military bard ensemble formed in 1983 during the Soviet-Afghan War. The group performed songs reflecting the experiences of Soviet soldiers, gaining significant popularity among troops despite limited official recognition. Its repertoire includes vocal-instrumental arrangements of wartime songs, often adapted from poems by officers and military journalists. Founded by Major Andrey Sukhov, the original lineup included musicians, dancers, and performers. Over the years, the ensemble underwent multiple lineup changes, producing albums such as Вспомним, ребята! and Пусть память говорит while performing more than 400 concerts in Afghanistan and across the Soviet Union. The group’s name derives from a KGB special forces unit operating in Afghanistan. Despite logistical and ideological challenges, Каскад continued to perform after the war, with later lineups maintaining tours and recordings throughout Russia and former Soviet territories. The ensemble is based in Yaroslavl. Founder Andrey Sukhov passed away on 18 November 2022.
