Plugg is a subgenre of trap music that emerged in the mid-2010s. It was developed by producer MexikoDro and other members of the production group BeatPluggz, whose work drew influence from the minimalistic production style of trap pioneer Zaytoven. The genre is characterized by a relaxed sound featuring sparse drum patterns, minimal hi-hat use, sub-bass 808s, prominent low-end frequencies, piano samples, airy pads, and bright or icy synthesizers. Productions typically incorporate claps on the third beat while limiting snares to half beats.

The genre is characterized by a relaxed sound featuring sparse drum patterns, minimal hi-hat use, sub-bass 808s, prominent low-end frequencies, piano samples, airy pads, and bright or icy synthesizers. Productions typically incorporate claps on the third beat while limiting snares to half beats. Plugg tracks are commonly produced in the 130–145 BPM range, although music outside this tempo range also appears. The frequent use of producer tags, particularly the “Plug!” tag associated with BeatPluggz members, is a notable stylistic element. Plugg production techniques are often blended with elements of cloud rap. MexikoDro remains one of the most prominent producers associated with the style, including work with Playboi Carti and other SoundCloud rappers.
Vocals in plugg music vary from typical trap rapping to melodic pop-rap approaches and hybrid singing-rap styles. The latter approach has been referred to as PluggnB by artists and listeners. The sound has expanded beyond the original BeatPluggz circle, with producers including Chinatown, DJ Young Kash, and CashCache adopting and developing the style, sometimes in collaboration with its pioneers. PluggnB producers such as XanGang and Goyxrd have moved the genre toward more energetic and faster-paced productions, featuring bouncier melodies, more static hi-hat programming, and increased use of snares.
