Shinedown is an American rock band from Jacksonville, Florida, formed in 2001 by vocalist Brent Smith following the dissolution of his previous band, Dreve. Smith, who remained under contract with Atlantic Records, assembled an initial line-up consisting of Jasin Todd on guitar, Brad Stewart on bass, and Barry Kerch on drums. After a series of line-up changes in the late 2000s, the group stabilised with Smith and Kerch alongside Zach Myers on guitar and Eric Bass on bass. The band has released seven studio albums, "Leave a Whisper" (2003), "Us and Them" (2005), "The Sound of Madness" (2008), "Amaryllis" (2012), "Threat to Survival" (2015), "Attention Attention" (2018), and "Planet Zero" (2022). An eighth album, "Eight", is scheduled for release in May 2026. The band has achieved multiple number one singles on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart and has sold over 10 million records worldwide. The origins of Shinedown trace back to Smith’s earlier band Dreve, which had signed with Atlantic Records in 2000 but was dropped before releasing an album, with the label retaining Smith for a development deal. He relocated to Jacksonville and began forming a new group, recruiting Stewart, Todd, and eventually Kerch after multiple auditions. The band recorded demos that led to the release of their debut album, "Leave a Whisper", on 27 May 2003. The album gained success gradually through touring and radio airplay, eventually achieving platinum certification in the United States. Singles such as "Fly from the Inside", "45", "Simple Man", and "Burning Bright" all reached the top five of the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. The band toured extensively during this period, including performances with Van Halen, Seether, and Three Doors Down. The second album, "Us and Them", was released on 4 October 2005 after a relatively short recording period. Produced with Tony Battaglia, it featured a more stripped-down sound. The band also contributed a cover of "Tie Your Mother Down" to a tribute album for Queen. Although "Us and Them" sold less overall than its predecessor, its singles, including "Save Me", "I Dare You", and "Heroes", performed strongly on rock radio. "Save Me" became the band’s first number one on the Mainstream Rock chart, holding the position for twelve weeks. The band toured widely, including appearances alongside Flyleaf, Halestorm, Godsmack, and Rob Zombie. Work on the third album, "The Sound of Madness", began in 2007 and involved significant internal changes. Stewart and Todd departed the band during the recording process. Smith worked with various session musicians before finalising the album with producer Rob Cavallo. Released on 24 June 2008, the album became the band’s most commercially successful release, reaching the top ten of the Billboard 200 and later achieving double platinum certification. Its singles, including "Second Chance", "If You Only Knew", and "Sound of Madness", achieved substantial chart success, with "Second Chance" crossing over into the Billboard Hot 100 top ten. During this period, the band established a new line-up including Myers and Bass. The fourth album, "Amaryllis", was released on 27 March 2012. Developed with a thematic focus on perseverance and personal growth, it debuted at number four on the Billboard 200. Singles such as "Bully", "Unity", and "Enemies" performed well on rock charts. The band contributed the song "I'm Alive" to the soundtrack of the film "The Avengers". Extensive touring followed, including co-headlining tours with Three Days Grace and performances with Papa Roach. Acoustic recordings released in 2014 included cover versions of songs originally performed by Metallica and Adele. The fifth album, "Threat to Survival", was released on 18 September 2015. Although it debuted lower on the Billboard 200 compared to "Amaryllis", its singles achieved strong chart performance, with several reaching number one on the Mainstream Rock chart. The band toured with acts including Breaking Benjamin and Five Finger Death Punch, and continued to headline tours and festival appearances through 2016. In 2018, Shinedown released "Attention Attention", their first album produced entirely by a band member, Eric Bass. The album incorporated conceptual elements and achieved commercial success, topping multiple Billboard genre charts. Singles such as "Devil", "Get Up", and "Monsters" contributed to the band’s continued prominence on rock radio. In 2020, the band released "Atlas Falls" in support of charitable efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, raising funds for relief organisations. The seventh album, "Planet Zero", was released on 1 July 2022 following a delay related to production logistics. It was preceded by singles including "Planet Zero" and "Daylight". Additional singles such as "Dead Don’t Die" and "A Symptom of Being Human" followed, the latter initially targeting adult contemporary radio formats before crossing over to rock radio. In 2024, the band introduced a line of hot sauces named after their songs. Work on the eighth album, "Eight", began in 2024. In 2025, the band released several singles from the project, including "Three Six Five", "Dance, Kid, Dance", "Killing Fields", and "Searchlight". The album was officially announced in February 2026, along with additional singles such as "Safe and Sound" and "Outlaw". The band has also been scheduled to perform at major music festivals, including the Sonic Temple festival in 2026.
