An unofficial hip-hop/rap sub-genre. It is usually used in a derogatory way to describe modern hip-hop/rap of the 2nd decade of the 21st century. This was started around the mid-2010's and late-2010's and it may date as far back as the mid-late 2000's. During that time period, traditional hip-hop/rap fans, critics, and older artists such as Ice-T noted the decline of hip-hop/rap. Ice-T goes far as saying that hip-hop was killed by Soulja Boy (a possible big influence on "mumble rap").

The phrase "mumble rap" used because the lyrics are often undecipherable due to the heavy overuse of autotune and the lack of enunciation. This causes the lyrics to be nigh-impossible for the average listener to understand. The extreme digital vocal effects often prevent it from sounding like a human voice altogether.
Additionally, many mumble rappers do not bother to rhyme at all. Several popular mumble rap artists have "Lil" in their name such as Lil Pump and Lil Uzi Vert. These and other mumble rappers dispute the label, citing select songs where some people can understand some of the lyrics, but they are usually lumped into the unofficial hip-hop/rap sub-genre due to the inhuman timbre of the vocals, similar digital instrumentation, and similarity of alleged lyrical content.
