Pornogrind (also known descriptively as Groovy Goregrind) is a style of Goregrind that is characterized by a relatively restrained tempo and heavy reliance on bouncy, groovy rhythms with mid-tempo palm-muted riffs following 2-step and skank beat drum patterns. As the name implies, pornogrind is commonly oriented around pornographic themes and lyrics; however, bands have been known to pull from a range of topics within the goregrind aesthetic. While the genre is sometimes seen as a tongue-in-cheek style defined entirely by its sexual themes, its musical characteristics set it apart from the rest of goregrind more so than its lyrics.
The earliest traces of pornogrind date back to the early 1990s with bands such as Gut, inspired by bands such as Impetigo and their slower-tempo contributions to goregrind. The genre started to gain more traction after the turn of the century with acts such as Rompeprop, Spasm, and Alien Fucker, with the emergence of Cock and Ball Torture helping further establish the genre within the Grindcore community. During this time in the late 1990s, pornogrind was forged as a countermovement against popular Death Metal and the perceived pretension surrounding it.
