He began his musical career in the mid-1970s as a member of Jade, a Wellington-based folk trio. The group played regularly in the capital and at folk music festivals and venues around the country. They also made a number of television appearances and released a self-produced LP. He has continued to write and play music ever since, with various bands and as a solo performer.
