Gay Genius is a pop music duo situated in Santa Cruz, California. It consists of John Tyler Martin, known for his prolific career as the vibrant soul of James Rabbit, and Nessie from Nessie & Her Beard. Upon first glance an audience could easily mistake the two for an electro-pop duo in the tradition of Soft Cell or Yazoo, but each member sings and plays a variety of instruments and brings a unique presence to the stage. Genres float heavily and brush against one another like thunder clouds in a tropical storm, melding disco, jazz, blues, calypso, and other American musics for a holistic pop experience. Tyler's knack for melody is both thwarted and enhanced by Nessie's tendency toward the bizarre, creating songs that are in equal parts catchy and cacophonous. Together the two have amassed the single greatest stockpile of musical knowledge and instruments in the Western Hemisphere, most of which has been condensed into their first album Perfect Dark. The rest will be dispensed periodically as they continue to strive for pop music omnipotence.
